Besides using old, gray, weathered wood, we also use Cedar. This is because Cedar is a great outdoor wood. It is used for fencing because it can handle years of weather without rotting. If you wish to purchase a porch shelf but want one that will handle more direct weather, the Cedar option is better than the weathered fir (see inside cuts and outside cuts on other Porch Shelf pages).
