Our porch shelves are made of weathered fir that was once part of a barn in the Rocky Mountains (see bottom photo). We use all of the wood we have including the weathered outside cuts and the new-looking inside cuts. We also make porch shelves with Cedar wood. This gives you 3 options when you choose a porch shelf. We also offer these 3 options in 2 different sizes. The large size is 32.5″ tall, 23.5 ” wide (roof bottom across to roof bottom), 16′ wide (left side wall to right side wall), and 5″ deep (front to back). The small size is 25″ tall, 19″ wide (roof bottom across to roof bottom), 13″ wide (left side wall to right side wall), and 3.5″ deep (front to back). See photos and measurements below. Weathered Wood Cuts
What do we mean by “outside” cut? The barn wood we use to make our porch shelves is 2.6 inches thick (see bottom photo). We re-saw that wood down to 4 boards that are approximately 5/8 of an inch thick each. From those 4 boards we will have 2 outside cuts, and 2 inside cuts. What does “re-saw” mean? Imagine a loaf of bread that came out of the oven an hour ago and you’re now ready to slice it. Don’t slice it the the usual way (across) instead, slice it the long way (from end to end). This will give you very long slices. Now imagine that the loaf of bread is sliced into 4 long slices of equal width. The 2 outside slices will have crust all along one side wall, but the inside slices will have no crust (except for the thin crust that goes all the way around the thinner edge of the entire slice). So, think of porch shelves with an outside cut as having a crust all along one side wall (and on the thin edges too). If you look closely at the photos below you’ll see the gray-colored outside “crust” on the roof tops, and on the tops of the 4 shelves. The left and right outside walls also have that gray “crust” too. Look at the third photo below. It shows the gray, weathered wood on the outside walls.
